The design of this family retreat employs a super-insulated slab, solar radiant heat and photovoltaic electricity. The setting is a hillside overlooking the upper Blackfoot valley on a former Plum Creek property that was acquired by the family through the Nature Conservancy and the Montana Legacy Project.
The outbuilding, modeled on the old Forest Service towers that still occupy some mountaintops in Montana, serves as extra bunk space and a place for stargazing.
